He slept through the entire ceremony, only waking up briefly to pose for a photo and win everyone’s heart.
Have you ever felt so drained on your first day that all you wanted was a nap, especially after a sleepless, nerve-wracking night before starting something new?
That’s exactly what happened to Brody, a tiny pup from Rhode Island who had a very big day ahead of him.
Brody, a 12-week-old Labrador retriever, had just been named the new K-9 comfort dog for the Bristol Police Department, and his swearing-in ceremony was meant to be a big deal.
But after waking up extra early for the historic moment, Brody couldn’t fight off his sleepiness and ended up dozing through the entire event.
“He plays really hard and he sleeps really hard,” said Officer Keith Medeiros, Brody’s handler, who explained that napping is a big part of Brody’s routine.
While the officers completed the formalities, Brody was peacefully napping on the desk, completely unaware of the attention he was getting.
Brody didn’t get the job sniffing drugs or explosives like other K-9s, because Medeiros, the department’s school resource officer, had a different vision in mind.
Instead, he proposed bringing in a therapy dog to comfort officers, students, and the community—and everyone agreed it was the right move.
Brody officially joined the force in mid-March 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic began to reshape the world and heighten stress levels.
Though the timing was challenging, it turned out to be a blessing, as Brody brought smiles and comfort when they were needed most.
“People are extremely stressed, particularly in law enforcement,” said Medeiros, noting how Brody’s presence instantly lifts spirits around the station.
People light up when they see Brody, eager to pet and hug him, making his role as a comfort dog incredibly valuable.
Brody’s duties will include visiting local schools and nursing homes, forming bonds with the public, and providing emotional support.
He’ll also help comfort crime victims during difficult moments, offering a calm presence in times of distress.
With all this important work ahead, it’s no wonder Brody needs plenty of sleep to keep up with the demands of his role.
Though he snoozed through his big day, Brody is simply gearing up for the meaningful journey that lies ahead.
He’s already won the hearts of Rhode Island, and his community is lucky to have such a sweet and loyal pup on their team.
